Is Booking.com Quietly Gearing Up to Overtake Airbnb in Alternative Accommodations? 🏡
We have analysed in our latest research at mydatavalue.com/research Booking.com‘s growth in alternative accommodation and catching up with Airbnb in booked nights.
Consider these 2024 final yearly report numbers from Booking Holdings and Airbnb:
– Booked Nights Comparison: I have estimated that Booking Holdings achieved 400.4 million nights in alternative accommodations (out of 1.144B in 2024, +9% YoY), a significant 15.6% YoY growth. This represents roughly 80% of Airbnb’s total 491.5 million nights and experiences booked.
– ADR Efficiency: Booking.com did this with only 3.5+ million alternative property listings compared to Airbnb’s 8+ million. That’s nearly double the bookings per listing (~114 nights for Booking.com vs. ~61 for Airbnb)!
– Listing Growth: Booking.com‘s alternative accommodation nights grew faster (15.6%) than Airbnb’s overall growth (12%). Their alternative listings also grew much faster (~17% vs. Airbnb’s ~4% net growth).
– Global Traffic Dominance: It’s also worth noting Booking.com‘s substantially higher overall global website traffic compared to Airbnb, despite Airbnb’s strong US presence.
While traditional hotels still form the bulk of Booking.com‘s business (~65% of nights), their strategic push into alternative accommodations is clearly gaining significant traction worldwide, especially outside the US.
