Is there still off-season travel?

In the past, travelers looking for bargains could rely on the shoulder or off-season, but the pandemic has upended this conventional travel wisdom

Jun 20, 2024

Every day brings new reports of measures to combat overtourism, such as hotel restrictions in Amsterdam, photo-blocking barricades in Japan, and protests in the Canary Islands. With the United Nations predicting that global travel will return to, and possibly exceed, pre-pandemic levels by 2024, the question arises: Is there still an off-season?

Key takeaways

  • Global travel is getting busier. Peak seasons are still crowded, but off-seasons are also seeing more tourists;
  • ForwardKeys analyzed data from three popular beach destinations: Thailand, Hawaii and the Maldives;
  • By dividing the total number of tourists by 12, they found an average of 8% per month. In Thailand, the low season from April to September still sees monthly tourist numbers above 7% of the annual total, indicating very little seasonality. In short, places like Thailand no longer have an off-season.
