Overtourism is fake news. Sorry to disappoint you. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸŽ“ Exactly 20 years ago, on September 27th, 2005, I defended my PhD at KU Leuven. The conclusion of six years of hard work. Six years ofโ€ฆ | Jeroen Bryon, Ph.D | 30 comments

Sustainable tourism is defined by the ๐™๐™‰๐™’๐™๐™Š as a way of traveling that takes into account its ย ยป ๐™˜๐™ช๐™ง๐™ง๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™›๐™ช๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ง๐™šย ยป : ๐™š๐™˜๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ข๐™ž๐™˜, ๐™จ๐™ค๐™˜๐™ž๐™–๐™ก, ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ง๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ข๐™š๐™ฃ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ก ๐™ž๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ But before overcomplicating things, letโ€™s keep it simple: ยซย ๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™–๐™ซ๐™š๐™ก, ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช ๐™–๐™ง๐™š ๐™– ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™–๐™ซ๐™š๐™ก๐™š๐™ง.ย ยป
Your reasons and your style of travel may differ, but you are still a tourist.

Here are some types of tourists:
๐Ÿ’ฐ ๐˜ฝ๐™ช๐™จ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š๐™จ๐™จ ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™ž๐™จ๐™ฉ : travels for work, conferences, or missions…

๐Ÿก ๐™ƒ๐™ค๐™ก๐™ž๐™™๐™–๐™ฎ ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™ž๐™จ๐™ฉ : which includes:
* the beach tourist (sun, sea, and relaxation, …),
* the adventurer (hiking, trekking, exploration,…),
* the wellness seeker (spa, yoga, retreats,…).
* Visiting family tourists โ€“ travels to spend time with relatives.

This list can go on…

And yet, many people complicate the definition.
As if being a tourist meant you shouldnโ€™t care about the environment, local communities, or how you travel.

As if the moment you consider all that, you stop being a tourist.

Hereโ€™s the paradox: we keep promoting ยซย ๐™จ๐™ช๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™–๐™—๐™ก๐™š ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™ž๐™จ๐™ขย ยป with a ๐™™๐™š๐™š๐™ฅ ๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™–๐™ซ๐™š๐™ก.
But the moment we talk about co-creating experiences with locals or traveling consciously,
some say: โ€œthey are no longer tourists. They become artists, magiciansโ€ฆโ€ ๐Ÿ˜€

โ“So letโ€™s ask:
– If you donโ€™t co-create with locals, does that make you just a โ€œ๐™ง๐™š๐™–๐™ก ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง๐™ž๐™จ๐™ฉโ€ ?
– And if you choose to go deeper in your travels, do you lose the title ยซย touristย ยป ?

๐Ÿ‘‰ The truth is simple: whatever your choices, you are always a tourist.
