With meticulous craftsmanship and a keen eye for the everyday, young and talented artist Casper Braat (1991) transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Using Carrara marble and classical sculpting techniques, he elevates familiar objects from Amsterdam’s daily life into timeless objects.
His mini-monumental sculptures offer a playful yet thought-provoking homage to the city: a Genever glass, an ‘Amsterdammertje’ (the characteristic street bollards), or a raw herring with pickles -symbols of local culture, reimagined in stone.
By presenting these objects as if dispensed from a vending machine, Braat invites us to both celebrate and reflect on our consumer-driven world. His works are designed to last forever – just like the memory of Amsterdam, carried home in marble by those who experience his art.
