Business travelers don’t prioritize sustainability

New research from BCD shows that while companies are prioritizing sustainability, travelers themselves are not putting the same emphasis on it

A recent air travel survey by BCD Travel, released Tuesday, shows that sustainability ranks low among the factors that influence business travelers’ flight choices. In particular, two-thirds of respondents rarely or never consider environmental factors, especially if it means paying a higher price.

Key takeaways

  • Only 4% of respondents said they consider sustainability when booking flights. The top considerations were arrival and departure times or flight duration (71%), cost (51%), and their employer’s policy (49%);
  • Travel managers can influence traveler behavior by encouraging or requiring sustainable practices, which often align with improving traveler well-being. For example, choosing direct flights is both more environmentally friendly and less stressful for travelers;
  • In addition, many respondents are already taking steps to reduce their carbon footprint: 66% prefer direct flights over connecting flights, and 47% aim to travel light by minimizing luggage weight, according to the report.
